Robert Mackie have ceased making traditional Scottish headwear. Last chance to buy as our remaining stock is very limited.
Our high quality diced Balmoral
cap comes from an Ayrshire family
firm who have making authentic
Scottish bonnets for over 170
years. This black bonnet is
knitted in wool and then milled to
give a high quality felted effect.
This black Balmoral hat has a band
of red, white and black dicing.
The left side of the Balmoral hat
features a hessian backed
grosgrain rosette, to which one of
our clan cap badges can be
affixed. Black grosgrain ribbon
tails, black grosgrain trim and a
classic red toorie (pom-pom or
bobble) adorning the top, provide
the finishing touches to this
classic Scottish hat.
Beware of the poorly
constructed cheap foreign
imitations of diced Balmorals
which use cardboard stiffeners
that soon fall apart. The superior
hessian stiffeners used in our
Scottish caps will last for
decades, every hat is hand
finished by skilled craftsmen,
using the finest materials, which
comply with stringent Ministry of
Defence standards.
The Balmoral bonnet evolved
from the larger ancient broad
bonnet which was worn for
centuries throughout Scotland. The
hat takes it name from the
Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire
which was purchased by the Royal
family in 1852 and remains to this
day their summer residence.
