The Huntly (Strathbogie) District tartan is a design of some considerable age. It's known to have been worn by a number of different clans during the Jacobite uprising of 1745. This sett is also known as the Marchioness of Huntly's tartan.

Following the defeat at Culloden, The Act of Proscription of 1746 made it illegal for any man or boy “within that part of Great Britain called Scotland, other than such as shall be employed as Officers and Soldiers in His Majesty's Forces, to put on Highland Clothes, the Plaid, Philabeg, or little Kilt, Trowse, Shoulder, Belts, or any part whatsoever of what peculiarly belongs to the Highland Garb.” Anyone dressed in “tartan, or partly-coloured Plaid or Stuff” ran the risk of being arrested and transported to “any of His Majesty's Plantations beyond the Seas, there to remain for the space of Seven Years.” The Gordon Castle Muniments from this period attest to the act, with lists of plaids and tartans given up by local tenants of the parishes of Rhynie, Kinoir (Kinnoir), Cairnie, Ruthven, Gairtly (Gartly), Dunbennan, and in the Raws of Huntly (Raws of Strathbogie).
