Glengarry Cap - Plain

Glengarry Cap - Plain
The Glengarry bonnet came into existence when some wearers of the Balmoral started wedging the hat up on the head and making a crease down the centre. The new style of cap was further popularised by Alasdair Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry the 15th chief of Clan MacDonell of Glengarry.

In 1794 MacDonell raised the Glengarry Fencibles and included the Glengarry bonnet as part of the regimental uniform. The flat-folding Glengarry could be tucked under a shoulder epaulette when necessary. Over time the glengarry bonnet became part of the everyday uniform for the Scottish regiments, the bonnet colour and diced band varied, to distinguish between different regiments.

In the past the cap was commonly worn cocked to the right, sitting slightly back on the head, however, the tendency in the last fifty years has been to wear the hat more level on the head. Today the plain black wool glen with red toorie is part of the standard uniform for pipers in most civilian pipe bands. The undiced hat is also widely worn with the kilt and highland dress outfits.

This high quality plain Glengarry cap comes from an Ayrshire family firm who have making authentic Scottish bonnets for over 160 years. The bonnet is knitted in wool and then milled to give the high quality felted effect. The left side of the Glengarry hat features a hessian backed grosgrain rosette, to which one of our clan cap badges can be affixed, grosgrain ribbon tails, grosgrain trim and the classic red toorie (pom-pom or bobble) adorning the top.

Beware of the poorly constructed cheap foreign imitations of Scots bonnets which use cardboard stiffeners that soon fall apart. The superior hessian stiffeners used in our Scottish caps will last for decades, every hat is hand finished by skilled craftsmen, using the finest materials, which comply with stringent Ministry of Defence standards.

Available in black, navy, bottle green, lovat blue, lovat green, maroon, red, royal blue, saxe blue and fawn.
