Buchanan Castle is situated near to the site of Buchanan Old House, the ancestral seat of the Clan Buchanan. The property was sold to the Grahams of Montrose in the late 1600's and remained their home until 1852 when the house burned down.

Buchanan Castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style by the 4th Duke of Montrose to replace the old house in 1854. The castle was sold in 1925 and has since fallen into disrepair.
