This shallow polished pewter luckenbooth love quaich is inscribed with the old Scottish romantic vow "Of Earthly Joys Thou Art My Choice" (You are my choice from all of life's joys). The centre of this quaich features a luckenbooth of two entwined hearts surmounted by a crown, an outer band of foliate scroll and Celtic interlace handles complete this exquisite piece.
The luckenbooth design has been used as a romantic gift in Scotland for at least four hundred years. The design is said to have been created for the betrothal brooch of Mary Queen of Scots from the fourteen year old Dauphin of France, whom she married in 1558, hence the two hearts surmounted by the crown. The name derives from the “locked Booths” near St Giles in Edinburgh where the design was sold for romantic occasions such as engagements and weddings.
The luckenbooth is also known as a witches or fairies heart and would be worn as a protective talisman to ward off supernatural forces such as the 'evil eye'. The charm would be pinned within the clothing of children to offer protection from evil spirits, deamons and wicked faeries.
The luckenbooth loving cup would make an ideal romantic gift for an engagement, wedding, anniversary or valentine's day.
