History of Clan MacLeod of Lewis:
The MacLeods of Lewis (Siol Torquil) had, from the beginning, always grudged the ascendancy of the MacLeods of Dunvegan, but when Torquil MacLeod of Lewis was killed in 1597,the Barony of Lewis passed to his son-in-law, Sir Rory Mackenzie of Cogeach. As a result, the representation of Siol Torquil passed to the MacLeods of Raasay, and in 1998, Torquil MacLeod of Raasay was recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms as Chief of the MacLeods of Lewis.
