County Roscommon
Typical of many Irish counties Roscommon is strongly based on agriculture and it’s ecomony is largely dependant on sheep and cattle. Formerly part of the O’Kelly family fiefdom, the unusually named River Suck forms much of its western border. Cromwellian troops were very active, destroying Roscommon town and castle.
In Common with much of Ireland, Roscommon’s populace suffered greatly during the potato famines, with many emigrating overseas. Oscar Wilde’s father lived at Castlerea. Fine Prehistoric sites and other examples of subsequent settlements are common throughout the county.
