County Monaghan
This was known as MacMahon country because of the dominance of that powerful clan. Previously it had been part of the kingdom of Oriel, one of the clan based minor kingdoms which formed ancient Ireland. Monaghan is a centre of lace making, and its farmers and noted for their enterprise with it’s difficult agricultural conditions. There are intriguing examples of religious contacts from Neolithic to modern times. The spectacular 13th century wooden and bronze Cross of Clogher is noted as one of the areas most important artefacts. The county lies in a low plain of rolling hills rarely exceeding 1000 feet, making it attractive to walkers and cyclists.
