County Longford
The long River Shannon flows through the western boundary of this inland county, traditionally known as Annaly when ruled by the O’Farrell family. Mainly low lying farmland and brown bog, the county relies heavily on agriculture, especially cattle and potatoes, though the people here suffered terribly during the potato famine, causing many to emigrate. Longford has achieved prominence as a centre of arts and writing, having been the birthplace of Oliver Goldsmith, Maria Edgeworth, John Casey and others.
Surnames associated with the county of Longford and the Longford tartan: Conway, Fleming, Flood, Gaynor, McCormack, McGilligan, McHugh, McMaster, Mulroy, O’Farrell, O’Quinn, Ronan, Sheridan, Slevin and Tuite.
