County Kildare
Home to the kings of Leinster for eight centuries at their court at Naas, County Kildare is now famous for its racehorse breeding and home to the Irish national stud and Curragh racecourse.
This is the flat and fertile land of eastern Ireland – the granary of this part of country, producing wheat, barley and oats, also lending itself well to cattle breeding. The Bog of Allen is the most famous example of an Irish raised peat bog, home to unique plant, insect and bird life. Once covering most of central Ireland, the bog has been decimated in recent times, providing peat for the horticulture industry.
Surnames associated with the county of Kildare and the Kildare tartan: Behan, Bermingham, Bracken, Burke, Carey, Colgan, Cullen, Devesey, Dunn, Eustace, Fitzgerald, Fitzhenry, McDonnell, Morrin, O’Conor, O’Kelly, O’Toole and Wogan.
