County Carlow
The Anglo-Normans invaded Co. Carlow as far back as the beginning of the 12th century, and several ruins, including Castle Carlow, which dates back 800 years, can still be seen today. Despite Mount Leinster and the Backstairs ranges in it's South-East, this county is predominantly flat and fertile, providing good agricultural ground. With barley, wheat and sugar beet being grown in this area, it is therefore no surprising to find food processing as one of the more important town-based activities.
Surnames associated with the county of Carlow and the Carlow tartan: Bolger, Cahill, Carew, Collier, Fortune, Gahan, Hayden, Kinsella, Nolan, O'Cavanagh, O'Doyle and Ryan.
