A short note on Tartans:

The dyeing of spun thread was once done with lichens, mosses and other vegetable matter. The colours so obtained tended to be more lighter shades and would often fade easily. The development of aniline dyes produced a wider range of colours. They were brighter and easier to acquire and use. These are called modern colours, and the original dye colours are referred to as old or ancient.

Our Ancient and Old tartans have a paler more moderate hue which reflects the time when vegetable dyes were widely used in Scotland.

The Weathered Tartans are in soft muted colours representing exposure to the elements.

Dress Tartans usually have a lot of white in the sett and are normally made into men's dancing kilts and ladies wear.

Hunting Tartans are usually in darker greens and browns and were worn so as to be less noticeable whilst in the outdoors.
