The dyeing of spun thread in Scotland was once carried out by utilising the nations native plant resources. Lichens, bark, heathers, plants, mosses, berries and seaweed were all widely used depending on locality. The colours obtained by using natural dyes tended to be in lighter muted tones and would often fade easily. The development of aniline dyes produced a wider range of colours, these are called modern colours, and the colours closest to the original dyes are referred to as ancient, reproduction or weathered.
Our images of authentic tartans from Abercrombie to Young are scanned from our own swatch books to provide the most accurate colour representation possible. However, it's difficult to capture the beauty and texture of any particular tartan over the web. Images of tartan colours can often vary depending on your monitor and graphics card.
