Sgian Dubhs

The Sgian Dubh, in Scots Gaelic, translates as black knife. There are many different variations of the spelling such as Skene Dhu, Skene Du, Skean Dhu and Skein Dubh all of which have the same pronunciation, 'skeen doo'.

There are several different theories on the origins of the Sgian Dubh, one suggestion is that the name Sgian Dubh (black knife) relates to the fact that the weapon was concealed about the body. After the failed Jacobite rebellion of 1745, which culminated in the defeat at the battle of Culloden of 1746, the carrying of arms, and wearing of tartan, was banned by an act of parliament. During this period it became common practice to conceal a utility knife secretively under the oxter. Whislt among friends the knife would be displayed openly which led to today's custom of carrying the knife in the top of the right kilt hose with the handle protruding above the hose turnover.

Another suggestion is that the name simply refers to the look of the knife - the handle was often carved from ancient bog oak which was darkened and preserved by the acidic peat bogs of the Scottish Highlands.

We have a strict policy of only stocking the finest quality Sgian Dubhs, all of which are made in Scotland by Scottish craftsmen using natural materials - no poor quality imports from South Asia guaranteed!

All of our Sgian Dubhs are constructed from quality natural materials such as wood, shed antler and leather, no tacky plastic handles guaranteed!
