This is an early large solid silver cap badge for the Clan Matheson/Mathieson.
The badge is in good overall condition with some wear and two minor dings commensurate with age. The badge, c 1875, is not hallmarked, though the original owner has inscribed his initials "A.A.B.M" on the reverse. The badge style is undoubtedly that of PG Wilson, Inverness. PG Wilson was a Highland silversmith renowned for his quality workmanship and this can be seen on this stunning fully hand-etched piece.
Features the Matheson Clan motto "Fac et Spera" (Do and hope), with the Matheson crest, a hand brandishing a cutlass.
Would make a unique Matheson family piece to hand down through the generations.
Measures 2" x 2.5".
Weight 17 grams.
